When I started this contest, I had no concepts of what to do at all. I knew I wanted four characters, and that they would likely parallel the main four characters of WEWY. My thought was that I wanted to make people who could fit into the game as it was, except with me unexpectedly as the character designer. But Perhaps that was just my interpretation of the contest?

So I picked four character archetypes: A Guitar Hero (hah pun), A technomancer anti-hero, a brawler/mechanic/freelancer, and a high-class artist. These concepts changed slightly as I drew, though they still fundamentally exist at heart.

-For Lark (combination of the bird and the band,) I wanted something comfortable and a bit punk, so I initially based him off the 'casual' style in Shibuya and then gave him some extra touches (such as his double-pronged hoodie) to make him feel a bit more 'Square.' (Heh. He's a square.) The hair started out basic before his 'horn' was stuck on, since a hero really ought to have a distinct up-do.
-Vier (German for 'Four' ) was a mix between 'Gorgeous' and 'Adult' styles, and I found myself staring at pictures of various host club members to make his hairstyle. Maybe thats his side-job when he isn't a computer hacker?
-Kiiro (yellow) was a mismatch of various pieces of clothing I spotted on women in Shibuya, but I tried to make her seem a bit avant-garde and fashionable. I talk more about her in her bio pic. ^.^
-MC, (feel free to guess) finally was inspired by the 'Hard' style, with a few of my own touches, and including the lovely pirate dreds inspired by the HAT picture ( [link] ) and various other sources. He's sort of a mish-mash, a Shibuya bum, the guy-who-is-probably-too-old-to-be-hanging-out-with-our-15-year-old-hero-but-is-doing-so-
anyway-cause-it-makes-him-feel-younger.
Wow that was long.

Finally, U-E came up with color schemes for them, and I worked on their very basic stylized cell-shading.
It took me forever.
I suck at coloring on the computer.

Go take a look at the other pictures for more info!

I think everyone missed the point. When this contest was first announced, I think everyone thought we had to design within the context and setting of WEWY, but now upon reviewing the expanded rules, it seems we could have come up with literally anything vaguely videogame-acceptable from the start!

Well, I personally would have been cranking out some creatures and villians, but I don't regret that we invented a cute little gang instead. Besides, since now Saeru and I know way more about Shibuya fashion sense then is healthy, we weren't going to waste all that research time. At first, I was all set to break out my old SHOXX and the FRUITs books and the lolita bibles for inspiration - but our studies soon showed that Shibuya is *very* different from all of those. Visual kei and the Harajuku scene are counter-fashion, FRUITs-style is anti-fashion, and cosplay is well...pretty much snubbed by "real" mainstream fashion. Oh well, so my plans were shot, but Saeru's designs here got it down pretty well here (with even 3.5 of the 4 distinct men's style categories represented, too.)
Also...Shibuya is not Twilight Town at *all* - much to the dismay of all us Kingdom Hearts-minded people. But we threw in some big zippers into the design anyway. Giant zippers go with everything.

I would like to comment (on reading the desc. again) that though I haven't been to Shibuya proper, I did see a lot of Shibuya guys about and I hung out in Shinjyuku quite a bit... Tokyo is just about the opposite of Twilight town in every way possible. Tokyo's loud, crowded, chaotic, and HUEG; Twilight Town is (relatively) small, peaceful, quiet, and (again, relatively) orderly. Tokyo's well, Japanese (duh?) whilst Twilight Town always struck me as very Western (alebit a kind of misinterpreted Japanese version. The architecture/climate is VERY weirdly a mix of Southern California and... New England? What?)

So... no. Shibuya =/= Twilight Town. XD
